Camp Simcha Goes to NYC!!!

July 22, 2014Leave a Comment

This morning we woke up bright and early for a delicious breakfast before boarding the coach-buses. Campers and staff were looking forward to a meaningful and exciting day in NEW YORK CITY!!!! As the buses pulled out of the campgrounds we all cheered and sang our favorite camp songs before settling down for the trip. When we peered out the window and saw the statue of liberty and huge skyscrapers we knew we were nearing the city. Little did we know that Camp Simcha would be privileged to be based out of an exclusive floor in Brookfield Place that overlooked the statue of liberty!

Each of the campers found a Camp Simcha bag at their seats filled with goodies, an American Flag, and Camp Simcha memorabilia. After dancing and enjoying our exclusive, private floor, campers and staff were honored to be addressed by Rabbi Simcha Scholar, Mr. Gross, the NYPD and fire department. Before they addressed us Grace, Sara, Malky, Ariana, and Samara sang their Camp Simcha version of Brave. Their beautiful, heartfelt song moved everyone. Mr. Gross then strengthened all who were present, saying that all the amazing campers at Camp Simcha are truly his heroes. Sarit presented Mr. Gross with a present created in glass fusion in thanks for all the care, time, and effort he puts in to making Camp Simcha all that it is for us. The Chief of Police celebrated the hope and strength our campers show every day as warriors! Chief Leonard applauded our campers for standing up in the face of adversity and fighting back! The borough commander of Manhattan spoke about what he experienced on 9/11 and shared that it’s about the hope and inspiration to keep going and working hard every day! Our final and most beloved speaker, Cara L., gave a heartfelt speech. Cara said that to her being brave means being scared but doing it anyways! She expressed her gratitude to Camp Simcha for showing all the camper that they are not alone in what can be a dark and scary world!

Camp Simcha moved on to ground zero where each camper was given the opportunity to stick their own American flag into a name engraved along the fountain memorial. Then, each camper received a piece of gold ribbon which had broken Guinness world record for the longest cancer awareness ribbon. They each wrote a meaningful message on their ribbon with words of strength and courage. Our campers were given the unique opportunity to tie their ribbon piece onto the only tree that survived the 9/11 tragedy. It was a meaningful experience for all!

When we returned to the 29th floor of Brookfield Place, the room had been transformed into a magical and fashionable venue! We enjoyed a scrumptious and special buffet together as we looked out over the magnificent view. Then came the biggest surprise of the day!!! A FASHION SHOW…with a twist!!!!! Our very own campers were the stunning models that cat-walked down the runway! Each excited camper was whisked backstage for a complete makeover. Many gracious makeup artists, hairstylists, and fashionistas gave of their time and talents to help our campers feel their most beautiful selves! The thrilled campers received bags filled with either summer, spring, winter, or fall styles to model as they walked down the runway. Additionally they could choose from a large selection of jewelry, sunglasses, and more to bedazzle themselves with. Each and every delighted model got their turn to show off their swag and style with everyone cheering them on! Camp Simcha models certainly have got the attitude, smiles, and style!!! Smiles spread from ear to ear as their gorgeous faces shined and they felt so proud! The massive goody bags that the gracious stylists gave added to the fun and magic of the day in a tremendous way!!!

In order to get a real feel of the city, the camp ordered double decker busses to take everyone on a tour of NYC! The elated campers and staff sat on the top of the busses together and rocked New York City with cheers and song! I say Fight…you say Cancer!!! I say Camp…you say Simcha!!! We soon had pedestrians of New York City waving, smiling, and shouting our cheers! The city of New York and Time Square looked magnificent from way up high. With the wind in our hair and grins on our faces, we all felt like we were on the top of the world!

After such an exciting and busy day, we piled off of the double decker busses to get our yummy dinners. Settled back on our coach-busses, we turned on a movie, sat back, and relaxed during our drive back to our happy Camp Simcha home!

Welcome back and good night! Time to rest up for our last full day at our amazing Camp Simcha!!!!!!IMG_9571 IMG_9654 IMG_9716

AVRAHAM FRIED!!! Campers and staff went crazy when the curtains opened and the all time favorite Avraham Fried was introduced! We shook up the dance floor as campers got the unique opportunity to dance and sing on stage with Avraham Fried. Magnificent Wizard of Oz Production!

July 20, 2014Leave a Comment

The epic production of the Wizard of Oz that our talented campers put on was a smashing success! We had been getting glimpses into the play as the campers worked tirelessly practicing throughout the week. It was better than we could have ever imagined! Behind the scenes, the stars of our show got their makeup applied and costumes donned as the smoke machines and sound systems were prepared. Finally, the curtains opened and our magnificent campers were revealed. Sarah (Dorothy) kicked off the show with a beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and the witch, Sienna, mesmerized us with her cackling laughter. The munchkins, played by the munchkins (the youngest division), were adorable as always! The scarecrow, tin man, lion, Dorothy, Toto, and the narrators transported us to the Emerald City. We almost thought that we were face to face with the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. The play continued with unbelievable dances, stunning songs, and awesome acting! At the end of the fabulous play, campers and staff gave our extremely talented stars a standing ovation!!! We are so proud of them!!!!

Paint Fight!!!

July 20, 2014Leave a Comment

After todays spectacular activity, campers and staff left looking like people who had just come back from ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ We splashed, we splattered, we smeared, and of course, we danced with buckets and jugs of colorful paint! Campers had fun splattering their counselors with paint and then the counselors playfully reciprocated. There was blue, yellow, green, red, purple, and orange paint flying everywhere!!! Then, everyone laid down on the floor and danced the Simcha moves with their hands and feet moving in unison. Everyone came out looking like unique pieces of artwork. Let’s jump into the showers and run to the next activity!!!

CSG Shabbat 2!!!

July 19, 20141 Comment

The peaceful aura in Camp Simcha on Friday afternoon belies the flurry of activity that occurs as campers and counselors excitedly get ready for the upcoming Shabbat. After showering, everyone runs to the pre-Shabbat spa for the royal treatment. They have a blast getting manicures, pedicures, and makeup, all the while enjoying each others company. With everyone dressed in their finest, the campers and counselors pose to capture the wonderful memories they are creating with friends. The beautiful harmonies sung as we welcome in the Shabbat, uplift and unite us as one. Following a delicious Shabbat dinner with hot chicken soup and moist meat and chicken, we sit in our bunkhouses and get to know one another better until our eyes close and we drift into a peaceful sleep.

Shabbat morning the campers and counselors awoke to a lavish breakfast with a huge spread of delicious treats. The divisions broke up into groups for entertaining games. The entire camp reconvened for lunch a short while later. Three of our beloved campers shared powerful parables, inspirational messages, and heartfelt thanks. Immediately after lunch, we enjoyed watching our campers perform a skit based off of one of our themes, When Zaidy was Young. The talented campers kept us captivated and laughing the entire time.

BINGO TIME!!! Everyone of all ages loves camp bingo! After a fun and spirited game, the campers received many wonderful prizes! The library, game room, and playgrounds were open for anyone who wished. It was a restful, peaceful, and enjoyable afternoon for everyone – especially after the busy week we had.

Then came dinner. There were so many different foods to choose from…we certainly never go hungry for even a moment in Camp Simcha! To top it all off, we had a huge ice cream sundae buffet with an endless amount of toppings. Campers piled up their vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice creams with hot fudge, marshmallows, chocolate chips, and sprinkles as they settled down to enjoy the harmonious shabbat choir. As the sun set over the magnificent lake, our talented campers sang moving songs.

The party moved inside after dark. With disco lights and blasting music, we shook up the dance floor and let loose! What a joyous end to an awesome day!!!

Wonderful Workshops

What is that heavenly smell? I think it’s coming from baking…let’s check it out! Campers are baking delicious challahs in honor of the Shabbat. The ninja turtles (middle division) surely know how to braid gorgeous challahs! In canvas painting this morning, campers were deep in concentration painting serene sunsets. The banging and laughter reverberating out of the leather workshop brought smiles to everyone’s face. Campers are hard at work at all of the various workshops finishing up each of their exciting projects.

Right now, the oldest division is on an exclusive trip to a shooting range in Port Jervis. We can’t wait to hear all about it when they get back!!!

A Magical Night in Camp Simcha!

July 18, 2014Leave a Comment

The magical night started out with a bouncing and exhilarating show by the Chicago Sky Squad. They thrilled campers and staff with their unbelievable trampoline tricks including jumping over a row of twelve, flipping off a trampoline and throwing a basketball into the hoop and more! We cheered, participated, and applauded the awesome performers.

Next up on our full schedule was a meaningful, stunning, and delicious bonfire. Campers and staff sat around the large, warm fire arm-in-arm singing to the melodious strains of the guitar. While munching on fire-roasted hotdogs, toasted marshmallows, and crunchy smores, we soaked in the beautiful night sky and bright bonfire. We sat harmonizing and embracing as the stars twinkled in the sky above. This experience brought us all closer together and truly feeling like one large Simcha family!!!
