Talent Show

June 28, 2011Leave a Comment

After a mini talent show yesterday, we had an even more fabulous one today! Every camper has something special to offer, and this was surely the forum to do so! What a great opportunity for each girl to express herself through her gifts and forte.

Only in Camp Simcha Special do we have such talented pianists like Shira, Lily, Sara, and Tehila! We also had Rebecca on the guitar, and Hannah on the flute. Everyone was quite impressed with Ashley and Shaindy’s gymnastics – who can do such cool headstands, back-flips, and splits?! It was incredible to watch and listen to Chayala read The Cat in the Hat in braille. Different bunks also got up and together all the campers cheered and sang and danced. Bunk 17 even made up a comedy skit which kept us all laughing for some time! (Mazal tov to Pessy and Blimy!)

The campers beamed as they received their “Oscar awards” (as in “Oscar the Grouch” from Sesame Street, get it?) and their counselors were very proud of them. Everyone could feel the campers’ joy of being the center of attention for those few moments on stage. Thank you to everyone who performed, and congratulations – you were great!

Cookie Monster Race

In the Sesame Street spirit, Rachel and Libby came up on stage and sang their favorite Sesame Street songs. Then, Gittel, Hindy, Zlatie, Chumie, and Yentie were all called up to the stage and each got three cookies which they raced to finish. The tension was rising as each camper gobbled down her cookies. After just a few minutes, we had a winner… Chumie was crowned Cookie Monster! Another round of the race called up Chana, Ahuva, Malka Bracha, and Rini and crowned Ahuva as Cookie Monster!

Workshop Watch: Candle-making

June 28, 2011Leave a Comment

The Simcha Spot, surrounded by trees and wildlife, creates a perfect atmosphere for a candle-making activity. Campers choose the exact specifications of their candles – from colors, to scents, to shapes. From start to finish, the candles are created entirely on their own! Ziva says, “I love seeing all the displays and colors, and the carved candles are especially amazing! It’s also run by my favorite person!”

Learning groups

At our first session of learning groups, we played a get-to-know-you game, in which staff members and campers introduced themselves and told everyone their favorite things. Looking forward to more fun and inspiration during learning groups!

Circus night

Everyone headed to the Social Hall for a night full of fun with Laura and Michael’s Garage Circus! We watched as Michael balanced across a tightrope, juggled, and rode a mini bicycle. He even made things disappear! His assistant Laura swung in the air holding only a ribbon from the ceiling. The campers faces lit up from excitement as they waved their circus light-up sticks in the air. Michael and Laura called up campers to help them do some magic tricks. Racheli felt the thrill of sitting on top of Michael’s shoulders way up high and then while he rode a unicycle. Molly and Shira kept their balance walking all the way across the tightrope. Even head counselor Rivky Schwartz got up on stage and did a balancing act for us. The circus did magic for the campers as they got a chance to be in the spotlight!

Parade marches through camp!

June 27, 2011Leave a Comment

During “chill time,” staff members dressed up as animals marched through camp in floats decorated as cages. Campers followed behind in golf karts pulled by our caravan-tractor. All were enthusiastic, waving, smiling, and cheering to all as they passed by other camp members.

Camp Simcha has Talent!

A fabulous talent show ended off our lunch. We had dancers, singers, gymnasts, jugglers, and more! Yenti and Zlatie each performed amazing dancing acts. Talia sang a beautiful song. Katie and Rachel performed a duet wheelchair trick. Ahuva astounded us with her gymnastic acts, doing cartwheels and headstands across the stage. Dani and Elana kept us laughing with their funny knock-knock jokes. All performing campers received clown noses as prizes!

First activities!

After a good night’s sleep, everyone was ready for an awesome first day of activities. First stop: the darkroom. Exciting things are going on in the dark, but that’s ok because Camp Simcha campers aren’t afraid of the dark! Choosing their own letters, shapes, and pictures, campers used special machines and chemicals to turn plain white papers into masterpieces. The Goldin Girlz had a pow wow first activity, where they also enjoyed a game of “two truths and a lie.” On their way to a mosaics activity, the Chummy Chums made up a cool cheer. Looks like there’s a lot of creativity happening in the scrapbooking room! Campers worked with colored paper, stickers, puff paint, ribbons, and more, to capture their summer experiences.

What do the campers have to say after just a few hours? Malky S. says, “Well, I’m making lots of friends and I love swimming and boating!” She plans on going swimming four times today! Rina K. is most excited for tonight’s night activity, so hang in there for updates on that tonight!

The Circus has Arrived!

June 26, 2011Leave a Comment

Welcome, welcome, welcome long awaited Camp Simcha Special campers! What a great first day – and get ready for an even better rest of camp! As the buses unloaded, campers were greeted by a three ring circus, a caravan, a fortune teller, and silly clowns and wild dancers! Returning campers were excited to reunite with their friends again, and new campers were eager to quickly form everlasting friendships.

After settling down, we ate dinner in the “circus” dining room. We had so much fun slurping up our meatballs and spaghetti! It was exciting and energetic to dance once again with our Camp Simcha family and friends!

Everyone headed to the Social Hall for night activity, where the different specialty staff members introduced themselves. We met our lifeguards as they sang “Down by the pool… down by the lake…” Our candle-making staff performed a song to the tune of the Maccabeat’s Purim song, which everyone particularly enjoyed! The waitresses also greeted us with their friendly presentation.

Now heading to bed after an exhausting day. Good night Camp Simcha Special!
