When Zaidy Was Young…

Hold onto your hats, (your newsboy caps, of course) because we’ve stepped through a time portal to Zaidy’s time. All those tales our grandfathers told us have come to life in the Dining Hall. It’s been decked out to resemble the Lower East Side from the early 1900s. And of course, there are plenty of costumed vendors selling their goods in the convincing market place. While breakfast was going on, campers lined up to ride a trolley stationed in the center of the Dining Hall. We danced, and made a train of campers and counselors which snaked its way across the whole room.

Activities are in full swing. Hammers are banging away in the leather room, and there is beautiful art being created in Canvas Painting. In the Sweet Shop, campers are creating beaches on cupcakes. We are taking full advantage of the awesome costumes and holding bunk photo shoots – 1900s style. Don’t worry, we will bend the laws of time and bring you more digital updates while we are here in the 1900s, hanging with Zaidy.

“I’m a cheerleader… I live in a small town, and I make beeswax lip gloss from the bees in my backyard. My dad takes care of our chickens. We’re going to get rabbits and comb them, spin their fur into yarn, and crotchet it into sweaters.”

Campers go from one exciting activity to the next adorned in costumes which match the theme (think Alices, mad hatters, rabbits, playing cards, pocket watches, hearts etc.).  Sarah F. and her counselor wear identical mad hatter costumes that they found in Camp Simcha Special’s very own well stocked costume closet.  In pottery, campers  work on the super fast spinning pottery wheel, and made mugs, bowls and even sushi plates.  They can’t wait to come back to paint their pieces.  Later, campers began making their very own mosaic mirrors in the arts and crafts room which overlooks the gorgeous lake.  At another activity, campers choose from a wide selection of ribbons and make pretty (and/or funky!) headbands.  Then the queen of hearts invites everyone to a tea party on the field.  The table is piled high with hors d’oeuvres.  Campers enjoy miniature tuna sandwiches, pastries, cut up fruit, and heart-shaped cookies.  Lace parasols hang and glittery butterflies adorn the field.  Every moment in Camp Simcha Special is filled with excitement and smiles.

“We found matching Alice in Wonderland costumes in the costume room. We’ll try to match every day. We probably won’t be able to, it’s hard to find matching costumes. But we’ll try.”

Welcome to Wonderland

Today’s fictional universe: Alice in Wonderland. When we arrived at the Dining Hall this morning, we really did feel like we were lost in an enchanting Wonderland! The Dining Hall has transformed overnight, and is now home to white rabbits, large (and small) ticking clocks, a mad tea party, and a rather menacing (somehow also adorable) red queen. Campers raided the costume closet overnight, so there are plenty of Alices and playing cards roaming the room as well. The Cheshire cat is very invisible (honestly, no one can find him), and the mad hatter looks positively mad, so the day is off to a great start.

Welcome to Camp Simcha Special

The energy in the air in Camp Simcha today is tangible.  Everyone can barely contain their excitement.  The camp is decorated to match the theme of the day which is fairy tales.  The characters from various different fairy tales adorn the field.  It is a magical site.   The buses roll up, and the staff (dressed in lively get-ups) go wild!!!  The best campers on earth are greeted with a live band and a dance that was prepared especially for them.  Campers first embrace their fellow Camp Simcha goers who they are thrilled to be reunited with, and then they meet their counselors who warmly welcome them. Grins stretch from ear to ear on the campers shining faces.  The super excited campers and their even more excited counselors then go to unpack in Camp Simcha’s homey bunk houses.  Some bunk houses have special themes.  When walking into one bunk house, you are transported to the wild wild west.  There’s a sheriff painted on the wall, wooden rocking benches in the lounge, and light fixtures that look look like bull horns hanging from the ceiling.  Another bunk has a circus theme, and you can almost hear the painted crowd roaring and the elephants tooting. After exploring their bunk houses and getting comfortable, the campers make their way to the field where stations are set up.  At each station there is an activity which matches the theme of fairy tales.  Campers make snow men, decorate fans, and make gingerbread houses out of graham crackers and candy.  Then the happy bunch make their way to the dining room which is decorated to match this summer’s theme, storybooks.  Campers are awed by the colorful magnificent display.  Campers and staff sit down to enjoy the warm delicious food, and cheer, sing and dance some more.  More fun is on its way to the happiest place on earth…CAMP SIMCHA.
