Jabali Acrobats

June 26, 2013Leave a Comment

Tonight’s night activity definitely got us pumped as the 6 African Jabali acrobats danced to African music, jumped, flipped and balanced around Jacob’s Gym.  They played limbo and started out simply.  Slowly, they lowered the bar – lower and lower and lower – until the man dressed in a shiny blue uniform with long dreadlocks was practically crawling until the rope. Then, all the men played jump rope and did cool tricks like flips and head stands while jumping rope.  Next, a man juggled a ball on a stick that he was holding in his mouth, and he did all sorts of tricks with it.  He threw the ball in the air, and caught it with the stick, and he bounced the ball up and down, without it falling to the floor.  We didn’t think it could get more entertaining until another man stacked 4 chairs on top of each other and did head stands and hand stands on the top chair!

Thank you to Alexis, Chayala, Hindy, Frannie, Rebecca, Sol, and Zlati who were great helpers and contributors to the show!

Native American Festival

June 26, 2013Leave a Comment

In conjunction with today’s awesome tribal theme, Camp Simcha had a special “Native American Festival” which had all different exciting booths and Indian music!  Most of the booths involved arts n’ crafts, but each booth gave you a different craft to take home.  The campers enjoyed making Native American dance rattles and pan flutes, which are similar to harmonicas.  They also made necklaces: basket-weaved necklaces made out of yarn and Native American necklaces made out of rocks and beads called “arrowhead pendants.”  Additionally, the campers made drums out of long rectangular sheets which they colored and wrapped around two container covers, along with some feathers, too, of course!  The teepee key chains were also a big hit – the campers loved making these tribal-themed key chains!  And how can we forget!! There was a huge fire pit, and a drum man singing and rain dancing in the middle, while there was corn grilling off to the side.

“My favorite activity was for sure all the arts n’ crafts!” Dani says.

“Naaahh, I loved the archery!” Jackie exclaims.

All the booths were so popular, and there’s even more fun to come tonight!

Tribal Times

This morning, the dining room transformed into a Native American town.  Staff members dressed asIndian men and women were coming in and out 0f their teepees.  Red, yellow, green, and blue feathers were poking out of their large headdressesand their long hair was swaying against their fringed dresses.  Some kids even took a canoe ride along “Lake Dining Room.”  Then, everyone sang along to “Come and Get It,” while they ate a delicious breakfast.  Let’s see what’s in store for today’s Native American theme!

Psychic?

Night activity was definitely a great surprise – we didn’t actually think the mind reader would be able to read our minds! He really wowed the audience.  First, he made everyone think of a number and guessed which one most people were thinking! Then he went on to guess Talia’s name and what she is wearing.  He even guessed where Blimi is from!  He also guessed that there is a Shira in the audience and that she is a lifeguard in camp.  Everyone was so stunned! How does he do this?!  If only we can hear some of his secrets!

Activities Have Begun!

Today was a fun day filled with loads of activities!  After eating a delicious lunch, the campers had all different learning groups, and then each division went to their next activities.  The Cukoo Clocks enjoyed swimming while the Geek Squads enjoyed the Sweet Shoppe, ductigami, and candle making.  Meanwhile, the Hipsters loved fencing and mosaics!  The activities just got even more exciting throughout the day: leather making, pottery, scrapbooking, canvas painting, and baking!

Can you believe it?  We have all sorts of incredible activities here at Camp Simcha!

And the fun just continues. . .

Stay tuned for tonight’s surprise night activity!

Traveling Back in Simcha “Time”

We walked into a large cave today – I mean, the dining room – and we were greeted by cavemen and Flintstones.  They played spooky music, served us cocoa pebbles for breakfast, and they were surprisingly very welcoming!  They even taught us the “Flintstones Song.”

I think you can all guess what the theme of the day is: The Stone Age!

In light of today’s incredibly creative theme, the campers are doing different fun activities: drawing pictographs like original cavemen, making stepping stones out of cement, cavemen storytelling, and we are even having an archeological dig in the baseball field!!

Settling In

June 24, 2013Leave a Comment

Our campers are unpacked and settled in!  After our first delicious dinner, we headed to the social hall for an awesome night activity of an acting game called “improv.”  Campers were called up to act out different scenes.  The stars of the night, Samantha and Mati were like professional actresses!  The audience was amazed, and the cheering and applause lasted a while.  Afterward, we all watched a “Welcome to Camp Simcha Special” video made by our division heads Aviva, Chanie, Chumi, and Rivka.  Everyone joined in while they sang “It’s Always a Good Time.”

We are looking forward to another beautiful day tomorrow at Camp Simcha Special, and we are excited to see what’s in store for the next two weeks!

Good night all!

And… They’re Finally Here!

Our campers have finally arrived!  All of the staff cheered and sang as the campers came off the buses one by one.  There was so much excitement in the air; music blasting, girls singing, popcorn popping, campers smiling, and counselors crying (tears of happiness, of course). There really is nothing better than to watch campers and counselors reunite and embrace!  Everyone is so glad to be back in camp. Simi says, “it’s good to be home.” For new staff members and campers, arrival day was just a glimpse into the joy that is Camp Simcha Special, where friendships and memories are made to last.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Camp Simcha Special 2013!!  The day has finally come!
Over the weekend the staff has been going to orientations, decorating the Camp Simcha grounds, and, of course, eagerly awaiting the campers’ arrival!  This summer’s theme is SIMCHA TIME!  Get pumped for an amazing two weeks!

The campers should be arriving any minute now, and all the staff is dressed in all sorts of amazing costumes – tutus, hats, glasses, and mismatched socks –  so it’s kind of hard to miss them crowding around the entrance anxiously waiting for the buses to pull up.

The minutes are ticking and “time” is flying by; we are so excited!
