Shabbat #1 in Camp Simcha Special was chock-full of bingo games, canteen chills and magic shows. From Friday night ball gowns to the Shabbat play after lunch and post twilight choir, there were no dull moments this weekend. Two campers shared their stories with us on the dining room deck and several choir soloist confirmed the rumor that talent definitely saturates the grounds and members of Simcha Special. The day finished off with a trademarked Simcha Special music bash and bucketloads of dancing. Wishing everyone a goodnight until next time…
“Ladies and Gentleman, the Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For…”
It was epic.
It was momentous.
It was “8th DAY” in Camp Simcha Special! Despite the Friday scurrying, the loaded schedule and the bucketload of activities on the agenda, Simcha Special managed to pull off another phenomenal surprise event for our emoji festival. We danced it up, we cheered it on, and in short, we bumped up the yellow-infused happiness levels on every single Simcha face this afternoon! With a promising week up ahead, this is Camp Simcha Special signing off until next time. 😉
Emoji Gojis and the Theory of Happiness
As it turns out, happiness comes in yellow pockets of fluff topped with red hearts and cartooned faces. And another thing, happiness is the color yellow and the sound of our campers bustling in the gym to bopping music by DJ Laykay. Emoji pillow-making was first up for morning activities along with emoji photo booths, emoji nail polish and tattoo stations-you name it, we’ve got it! Our girls are hard at work stuffing pillows, gluing smiles and cutting out hearts all before lunch on a Friday afternoon! Our first round of emoji volley ball is starting soon and the yellow pockets of happiness continues…
😉 🙂 😉 🙂 😉 🙂 😉 🙂 😉 🙂
One Million Smiles
Emojis have been trending for a while now and finally, finally they’ve hit Camp Simcha Special! It was an emoji filled wonderland in the dining room this morning in honor of YELLOW EMOJI DAY and our campers caught on quickly. Indeed, we have seen nearly every emotionally-caricatured yellow-faced expression this side of the East Coast! Looking forward to a happy/exciting/surprising/animating/enthusing afternoon! 🙂 😉 🙂
Late Night P.S
But wait, there’s more…
Just as we thought we had heard the last farewell echoes of our perfectly wonderful neon Thursday, our head staff members surprised us with a late night light-up bash! They thought of everything, from blazing streamers to neon cups and glowing face paint. Traces of music could be heard well into the night as all older divisions joined in on the dance floor. Night Activity-take two was a giant success. With face paint to wash off and totally gnarly costumes to put away, this is Camp Simcha Special signing off for the night…
Glow Sticks and Juggling Acts
Down at Jacob’s Gym our campers joined in on some old style karaoke and glow-in-the-dark miniature golfing as part of our neon day soirée this afternoon. Optical illusions and tennis racket juggling was up next on the post dinner menu with Keith Leaf, The Amazing Fire Juggler! His first act included Aviva, one of our very own campers who assisted Keith, passing him a ball on command as he began to juggle. Chinese yo-yos and an Indian net that resembled an American pizza tosser, composed the foreign aspects of our show tonight. For one of his final acts, Keith presented his triple knife juggling rendition followed by a knife/tennis racket/plunger juggling bonanza! And finally, the moment we’d all been waiting for (drum roll please….) The Firing Act! With the lights dimmed and the music beating, Keith whipped out the glow-in-the-dark extra heavy equipment to wrap up our neon saturated day. Complex fire juggling simultaneously coupled with comical impressions seemed to be Keith’s specialty tonight as he blew out the last torch, heading a final hurrah to our neon Thursday! This is Camp Simcha Special singing off for the night and looking forward to our first weekend together!
Street Art in Simcha Special
Neon spray painting this morning ranged from benign T-shirt decorating to full blown graffiti! Campers like Jill came to sign their names or initials with bright pinks and glowing greens as part of our neon-themed activity roster. Gabi spray painted her crutches to add a bit of the 8O’s tinge to her decor while Miriam Devorah spray painted her very own counselor’s hair pink! Sneakers were highlighted and the grass around the basketball courts permanently stained as lasting remnants of our highlighting, neon painting “Color Craze!”
What “Goes” With Highlighter Yellow?!
Get your “RAD” on today dudes and dudettes, with a Simcha Special glance back into an 8O’s whirlwind of color for Neon Thursday. Boom Boxes, Rubik’s cubes and Journey’s hit song “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” were all on display this morning trailed by highlighter pink and yellow wigs. with our Division Heads dressed as cassette tapes and neon colored bagels on the breakfast menu, 8O’s Thursday was off to a totally gnarly start! Spray-paint graffiti and glow-in-the-dark golfing are on the schedule and we are totally excited!
Later dudes…
Acrobatic Twists and Silk Flips
Acrobatics was on the night activity agenda this June 29th. “The Circtaculars” curved and juggled, climbed and swung in Jacob’s Gym and some of our very own got to perform right along with them. Five volunteers sported their hoola-hooping talents while the performers shoulder-climbed and front-flipped with impossible flexibility. This is Camp Simcha Special signing off for the night and looking forward to tomorrow’s color scheme…
A Day in the Life of A Simcha Boot Camper…

There we were, peering down at the long road ahead of us from the top of “Warrior Summit,” a steady rope climb from the ground below. Our fellow soldiers were right behind us beginning their ascents into the muddy madness ahead. We slid down into the “Mud Mounds,” trying to keep our balance amidst a jungle of trenches and hills oozing with freshly wet mud. But we trudged on, eager to prove ourselves to our superior captains and to ourselves. We would beat this “TOUGH MUDDER” no matter what! Pretty soon we came upon a sign that read “Walk the Plank,” warning us of the criss-cross of balance beams that beckoned us onward, daring us to defeat its narrow turns. Some of our troops managed a few beams only to plummet into a pool of muddy chaos after a single false step. We picked up our fellow campers and brushed ourselves off determined to move on. The tire jumps came next and we once again took on the challenge, alternating each foot through a corresponding tire until all of our troops were through. The last obstacle came in the form of a muddy swamp, yes, it was the notorious “Muddy Mayhem!” We slid down a water slide right into its swampy embrace, our clothes caked in layers of grime and dirt, a sweet testimony to our success. We had done it! We had fought hard and completed the legendary “TOUGH M
UDDER!” With our feet heavy with mud and music in our ears, we looked back at the dripping, mucky trail we had left behind, a messy slew of Camp Simcha Troopers on this very brown day.
